Swing Dress

The Swing Dress is a knee-length dress, which is fitted at the waist and then flares out into a full skirt. It began life in the dance halls of the 1940s & 1950s, and was popular as the skirt style means it swings out with the dancer as she moves.
As always, there are variants to make with this pattern. The dress can be made with a raised or normal waist and has both smooth and puffed sleeves. The top is given a feminine fit through darts and small gathers. The skirt has pockets and a narrow belt makes the dress complete. This pattern has a little added extra: by replacing the skirt by a hip piece you can make a blouse. Suitable fabrics are various types of jersey such as single jersey, scuba, french terry, punta and jacquard jerseys. You will often make and wear this beautiful dress!
